In the midst of escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada, a city councillor in Ottawa is advocating for the renaming of a street currently named after former U.S. President Donald Trump.
A previous attempt in 2021 to rename Trump Avenue in Ottawa’s Central Park neighborhood was unsuccessful due to mixed opinions among residents following a consultation process.
Councillor Riley Brockington expressed his belief that it is now imperative to address what he views as an awkward situation, citing Trump’s threats to Canada’s sovereignty and economy as reasons for the change.
Brockington intends to collaborate with residents of Trump Avenue to initiate the renaming procedure after the upcoming election, emphasizing his determination to see it through without further debate.
The Central Park area features streets with New York City-themed names, including Staten Way and Grammercy Park, adding to the local flair.
During a discussion prompted by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe’s motion to support Ottawa businesses impacted by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, Brockington made his stance known.
Sutcliffe acknowledged the potential inconveniences that renaming Trump Avenue could pose for residents in terms of updating identification and contact information. However, he expressed his personal stance against any association with Donald Trump in Ottawa.
The decision on renaming Trump Avenue is pending further consultations with residents, but the sentiment among key figures is leaning towards dissociating the street from the former president.
