A highly skilled air force officer known for his sharpshooting abilities and passion for collecting firearms has received a sentence of two years less a day of house arrest for unlawfully bringing eight guns into Canada.
Major Kendrick Barling, who admitted guilt in May, was found to have concealed gun components, including some lacking serial numbers, among his clothing and shoes when he returned to Canada in August 2023. Initially facing 29 firearm-related charges from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), his recent sentencing in Brockville Superior Court highlighted Barling’s military service and personal character.
During the court proceedings, Assistant Crown attorney Will Webber described Barling as a valuable member of society who acknowledged his mistake. Defense lawyer Steven Edgley echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Barling’s outstanding background. The sentence, based on a joint recommendation from both legal teams, includes a provision prohibiting Barling from owning firearms, except for those required for his military duties, to safeguard his employment.
Justice Brian Abrams, while acknowledging the seriousness of illegally importing restricted firearms, noted the adverse impact on Barling, including losing his extensive firearms collection and jeopardizing his military career. The court learned that Barling had transported guns to the U.S. while working for NORAD and acquired additional firearms during his assignment there.
Despite the offense, no evidence suggested that Barling intended to sell the illegally imported firearms or supply them to criminals. Recognized for his exceptional marksmanship with various accolades, including the Queen’s Medal for Champion Shot, Barling’s lengthy and distinguished service in the Canadian Armed Forces was also mentioned during the sentencing.
Justice Abrams expressed hope that the military authorities would consider Barling’s acceptance of responsibility and his exemplary service when evaluating any future decisions regarding his career. Following the sentencing, the Canadian Armed Forces initiated an administrative review of Barling’s conduct without disclosing further details during the ongoing assessment.
