The Ontario government is assisting the City of Hamilton in establishing a tariff response team to aid the steel industry, a crucial sector for the city, in combating job losses and tariff challenges. Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli emphasized the importance of Ontario-made steel in the province’s supply chain and expressed concern that steelworkers are directly impacted by tariffs. The government announced a $390,000 investment from the Trade-Impacted Communities Program to support the city’s $588,000 initiative to assist businesses affected by tariffs, particularly in steel and manufacturing.
Mayor Andrea Horwath, along with Hamilton Mountain MPP Monica Ciriello and newly elected Hamilton East—Stoney Creek MPP Jeff Beattie, were present at the funding announcement. Horwath highlighted the challenges faced by local steelworkers, citing impending layoffs at Stelco following the decision to idle part of its Hamilton plant.
The newly introduced tariff response team, in conjunction with measures outlined in the Head of Lake Ontario Plan, aims to ensure affected workers and their families receive comprehensive support and retraining opportunities. Described as a facilitator to streamline access to government support programs and new markets, the team is expected to be operational soon.
CBC Hamilton inquired about the potential nationalization of Stelco, a topic that has garnered attention from various political figures. While Minister Fedeli did not dismiss the idea outright, he emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with companies to achieve shared objectives. Referring to the provincial investment in Tenaris in Sault Ste. Marie, Fedeli highlighted the growth in Ontario steel sales last year.
Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly addressed the issue of U.S. tariffs against Canadian steelworkers during a recent news conference. Joly noted that options being considered include compelling Cleveland-Cliffs to divest Stelco in Canada and imposing financial penalties. Her department is actively engaging with the union to explore potential legal actions, with further updates expected in the near future.
