Obby Khan has announced his resignation as the leader of the Opposition Progressive Conservatives in Manitoba. The announcement came after what seems to have been a symbolic confidence vote last Friday, with no clear indication of which member of the PC caucus initiated the vote or the reason behind it.
Khan took over as party leader last year following the resignation of former Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson in early 2024. He emerged victorious in a closely contested race against Wally Daudrich, a Churchill hotel and ecotourism company owner who has since left the party.
Before entering politics, Khan, a former CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers football player and entrepreneur, was elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 2022, securing the Fort Whyte seat in Winnipeg through a byelection. His leadership role followed Stefanson’s departure after the PC’s defeat in the fall 2023 provincial election to Wab Kinew’s NDP.
Upon assuming the leadership position, Khan made history as the first Muslim and the first Canadian of South Asian descent to lead the party. Currently, the Tories hold 20 out of the 57 seats in the Manitoba Legislature, with the NDP in power at 34 seats, the Liberals with one seat, and two Independents.
The next provincial election is scheduled for October 2027. As per the PC Party’s constitution, a new leadership race can only be initiated if the leadership position becomes vacant, the leader becomes incapacitated, requests a race, or if a majority of PC members at a general meeting vote in favor of a leadership contest.
The Manitoba legislature is set to reconvene on Tuesday, with further updates expected in the future.
