Nurse’s Legacy Lives On: Saved Four Lives Through Organ Donation

A nurse, who devoted her life to aiding others, posthumously saved four individuals through organ donation. Pauline Thornton, aged 62, served at Hull University Teaching Hospitals for 42 years. Following her passing from a brain haemorrhage in February, she generously donated her heart, kidneys, and liver. In honor of her legacy, staff members plan to climb Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough to raise funds for the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity and Hull Help for Refugees.

Claire Thornton, Pauline’s daughter and a nurse in Hull, expressed how her mother’s lifelong altruism extended to helping others even after her death. Commencing her nursing career in Hull in 1984, Pauline initially worked as a scrub nurse in the theatres at Hull Royal Infirmary before advancing to the role of charge nurse at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham.

Despite transitioning to flexible retirement in 2019, Pauline continued her service as a scrub nurse in pediatric theatres at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital. Additionally, she volunteered at Hull Help for Refugees, where her generosity and kindness were deeply appreciated by her colleagues.

Claire hopes that by sharing her mother’s narrative, awareness about the crucial impact of organ donation can be heightened. She emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting loved ones’ wishes regarding organ donation, as it can bring solace and clarity during challenging times.

Janine Tate, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull United Teaching Hospitals, lauded Pauline and her family for their decision to donate organs, highlighting Pauline’s lifelong commitment to aiding others. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign led to the implementation of opt-out legislation on organ donation in 2020, paving the way for innovative techniques in organ transplantation that could significantly increase life-saving procedures.

The introduction of profusion methodology, pioneered in Newcastle upon Tyne, holds the potential to facilitate hundreds of additional life-saving transplants annually, including liver, lung, and kidney transplants. The opt-out system for organ donation in England, initiated in May 2020, presumes individuals as donors unless they choose to opt out, with family consent always being prioritized.
