Norway’s King Harald, a modernizing figure who emerged from the shadow of his charismatic father during his more than three-decade reign, has passed away at the age of 89, the royal palace announced. The monarch, who was Europe’s oldest reigning king, died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, at 6:35 a.m. local time.
King Harald had been hospitalized on August 17 for a bacterial blood infection. In 2024, he had also undergone medical treatment while in Malaysia and later received a permanent pacemaker after being brought back to Norway by the military.
In 1991, Harald ascended to the throne as the ceremonial head of state and had expressed his commitment to lifelong service despite reducing his official duties in 2024. His passing comes at a challenging period for the Norwegian royal family.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Harald’s son Crown Prince Haakon, has faced scrutiny for her association with the late Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, her son Marius Hoiby recently received a four-year prison sentence after being convicted of rape and domestic violence charges.
