“No Political Motive: Man Arrested in Ex-MP’s Murder”

Police have apprehended a man in connection with the suspected murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe, clarifying that the incident is not believed to be politically motivated. The 78-year-old was tragically discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, a village situated on Dartmoor, Devon. Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP who later transitioned to a Brexit Party MEP and then a Reform UK spokesperson, resided alone and was found by a caretaker with severe head injuries.

Law enforcement has not disclosed the exact cause of death but confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old white British male on suspicion of murder. The individual was taken into custody in Newton Abbot, approximately 10 miles from Widdecombe’s home. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman of Devon and Cornwall Police stated during a press briefing that there is no indication of political motivation or terrorism involvement in the crime.

Details regarding potential theft, forced entry, or weapon usage during the attack have not been revealed. Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson emphasized the swift progress of the investigation, expressing condolences to Widdecombe’s loved ones and affirming the pursuit of a white male suspect.

Following the incident report, a suspect was swiftly arrested, with Chief Constable Longman emphasizing the ongoing and rapid nature of the inquiry. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist in shedding light on the situation.

Police were alerted to the scene in Haytor Vale within Dartmoor National Park on Thursday morning by emergency medical services. Widdecombe, who lived independently, was declared deceased at the location. Her family has been notified and is receiving support from specialized officers.

Having retired in 2001, Widdecombe relocated to her Devon home named Widdecombe’s Rest in 2008. In a previous interview, she expressed contentment with her lifestyle and downplayed concerns about security measures, stating her lack of fear and reliance on surveillance cameras for protection. Despite receiving occasional death threats, Widdecombe dismissed them, emphasizing the importance of free interaction between MPs and constituents.
