A wildfire at Stockport Cricket Club was averted from spreading further thanks to the quick actions of a nine-year-old girl on July 18. The girl, a junior cricket player and daughter of bar manager Rebecca Evans, alerted her mother to the blaze while she was serving customers. Firefighters were called to the scene as the fire engulfed bushes and trees on the cricket ground bordering Cale Green Park, forcing a temporary halt to the game.
Reports indicate that this incident is part of a pattern of targeted attacks on the club, including fires and vandalism. Club officials noted previous incidents of damage, trespassing, and racist graffiti. Greater Manchester Police have received multiple reports of antisocial behavior involving fireworks, cannabis, and fires in the area.
The club treasurer, Herman Schurink, highlighted the escalating vandalism issues, with substantial costs incurred for repairs. Schurink emphasized the importance of volunteers in mitigating expenses, estimating that selling 1,000 pints of beer would cover repair costs. He suggested the installation of more secure fencing to deter future incidents.
In a social media post, Stockport Cricket Club expressed frustration over ongoing troubles with vandalism in the park area adjacent to their property. The club called for clearing the bushes and creating open spaces to prevent hidden spots for mischief. Concerns were raised about the safety of individuals, particularly children, in light of the repeated incidents.
