Anthony Hopkins, from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, noted the early start of harvest activities this year across the UK, with farmers working tirelessly to avoid extreme daytime temperatures. Some farmers, already grappling with rising costs, are considering selling their farms, further exacerbating the situation.
There are growing fears of increased food prices in stores, adding pressure on household budgets. The new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has prioritized addressing living costs as a key agenda.
Dr. Anna Murgatroyd, a hydrology lecturer at Newcastle University, anticipates rising food prices and potential shortages of British products on shelves in the coming months. Farmer Andrew Ward from Lincolnshire highlighted the detrimental impact of the prolonged drought on crop yields, warning of a wheat shortage nationwide.
