An official update from Network Rail has been released following the recent train accident near Bedford that resulted in the tragic death of one train operator and injuries to around 100 passengers.
To facilitate the intricate recovery process, a temporary road has been constructed in the adjacent field to the train tracks where the collision occurred. This road will facilitate the movement of two 110-tonne rail-mounted Kirow cranes that will lift the damaged carriages from the scene. Subsequently, a road-mounted crane will transfer the carriages onto a specialized trailer designed for heavy equipment transportation.
Following the removal of the carriages from the site by road, Network Rail has confirmed that engineers will inspect the track for damages, conduct necessary repairs, reinstate the overhead lines, and perform final safety checks before reopening the railway line.
Network Rail’s statement highlights the commencement of a complex recovery operation to clear the damaged trains and carriages from the railway premises. The process involves the removal of the Overhead Line Equipment to make way for the temporary access road and concrete foundation required to support crane operations.
The late train driver has been identified as Shaun Burton, a dedicated railway professional who had been with East Midlands Railway since 2019. The 60-year-old is remembered for his exemplary service that impacted both colleagues and passengers positively.
The collision occurred on Friday afternoon, June 19, near Bedford when the 4.40pm EMR service from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the rear of the 3.50pm service from Nottingham to London St Pancras. Network Rail has advised travelers that disruptions are expected in the Bedford area until June 28, with no Greater Thameslink Railway services north of Luton and no EMR services operating south of Bedford during this period.
