Keir Starmer Faces Mounting Pressure Amid Calls for Resignation

After narrowly escaping a political crisis related to the Peter Mandelson scandal in February, Keir Starmer has been projecting a resolute attitude. Despite facing mounting pressure, the Prime Minister has vowed to stay in office, emphasizing that a leadership contest would create turmoil and disrupt the country. He has reiterated that the electorate granted him a five-year mandate to implement the promised changes following Labour’s significant victory in 2024.

This steadfast message has been consistently delivered by Starmer throughout various challenges, including the Mandelson scandal and Labour’s disappointing results in the recent local elections. Despite Andy Burnham’s successful by-election win in Makerfield, which provided hope to Labour MPs regarding overcoming Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, internal party discontent seems to be growing.

During a call with Labour staffers, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of unity within the party and cautioned against internal conflicts that could lead to chaos, drawing parallels to past government failures. However, recent developments suggest that his message is struggling to resonate with party members.

The party’s mood has noticeably soured over the weekend, with more MPs, including some who previously supported Starmer, now calling for his resignation. Notably, support from Cabinet members is dwindling, with prominent ministers like Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander joining the chorus urging Starmer to step down.

Following Burnham’s election victory, there has been a lack of collective backing from the Cabinet for the Prime Minister’s stance, mostly met with silence. In a significant turn of events, Peter Kyle, speaking on behalf of the government, refrained from ruling out Starmer’s potential resignation in the near future. He mentioned that the Prime Minister is evaluating the “political realities” stemming from Burnham’s win, hinting at a possible decision within the next 24-48 hours.
