“Mum’s Campaign Urges Honor for Organ Donation Wishes”

A mother seeking a heart donor for her young daughter has initiated a campaign to advocate for the importance of honoring organ donation consent in England.

Rebecca Lambert, aged 30, is pushing for legislation that would make an individual’s decision to donate organs legally binding once they are registered as a potential donor. In the last recorded year, 842 deceased donors had indicated their willingness to donate organs, but in 10 to 12% of cases, families chose to decline consent, amounting to approximately 84 to 101 potential donors. This missed opportunity could have saved up to 909 lives, as each donor has the potential to save nine lives.

Rebecca’s petition urges the government to enforce laws that prevent family members from overriding a person’s registered donation decision after their passing.

Becca and her husband Kevin, residing in Cleator Moor, Cumbria, are advocating for more discussions within families about organ donation to provide children like their daughter Poppy, who requires a heart transplant, with a chance at life.

They are supporting the Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign, aiming to reduce the waiting time for transplants. Becca, employed in blood donation at the NHS, emphasized the need for respecting individuals’ wishes regarding organ donation posthumously to increase life-saving transplant opportunities.

Additionally, Terry Archbold, a police officer from Burnopfield, Co Durham, is supporting Rebecca’s cause after his daughter Beatrix Adamson-Archbold waited over 15 months for a heart transplant. He stresses the importance of incorporating organ donation education into the national curriculum.

The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign led to the implementation of the opt-out system for organ donation in England in May 2020, in honor of Max Johnson and his heart donor Keira Ball.

An NHS Blood and Transplant spokesperson highlighted the significance of respecting registered donation decisions, as it greatly impacts the donation process. Encouraging individuals to record their donation decision can significantly increase the likelihood of proceeding with organ donation and potentially save numerous lives.
