The mother of a victim in a Nottingham stabbing incident expressed concerns about systemic failures similar to those in the handling of another murder case. Barnaby Webber, a 19-year-old student, was tragically killed by Valdo Calocane, a paranoid schizophrenic, on June 13, 2023, along with his friend Grace O’Malley-Kumar, also 19, while they were returning home after a night out at the University of Nottingham.
Calocane proceeded to kill caretaker Ian Coates, 65, and used his van to harm three pedestrians, who fortunately survived. Following the conclusion of the inquiry into the attacks, Emma Webber emphasized avoiding using the tragedy to incite hatred or unrest.
She drew parallels between her son’s death and the case of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old who was handcuffed by police as he lay dying after being stabbed. Mrs. Webber highlighted the failings of state systems and urged against politicizing or sensationalizing such tragedies.
Regarding the inquiry, which involved numerous testimonies over months, Ms. Webber described it as emotionally challenging, highlighting ongoing failures since the incident almost three years ago. Dr. Sanjoy Kumar, father of Grace O’Malley-Kumar, stressed the importance of accountability and preventing such tragedies in the future by holding individuals responsible for their actions.
Looking ahead to the inquiry’s closing statements in September, Dr. Kumar mentioned the need for more evidence to be made public due to the absence of a trial for the killings. Darren Coates, son of Ian Coates, expressed determination to seek justice and continue the fight for accountability.
