A mother and her daughter tragically lost their lives in a devastating incident at Mersea beach, Essex, where they were swept away by a powerful tide, as confirmed by a family member. Shelina Rahman, a 41-year-old teacher, and her 15-year-old daughter Sameeha perished while attempting to rescue Sameeha’s seven-year-old cousin, Musa Rahman, who is currently in critical condition at the hospital. The family was just about to leave the beach after a pleasant day out when the tragedy unfolded.
According to Shahin Ahmed, Musa’s father who was present at the scene, a sudden strong tide overwhelmed them, causing panic as their feet were swept away. This unfortunate event occurred amidst a series of drowning incidents in the UK since late May, highlighting the dangers of open water activities, especially during hot weather.
The incident took place on Mersea Island, known for its unique location affected by changing tides that flood the access road twice a day, sometimes trapping visitors for hours. Mr. Ahmed, speaking to Surma News, revealed that 12 family members were present during the incident, with bystanders, including Craig Bowe, helping to rescue the family from the water. Mr. Bowe’s wife joined others in attempting to revive Shelina and Sameeha on the shore.
Dr. Mansur Rahman, the bereaved husband of Shelina and father of Sameeha, expressed his sorrow at the tragic loss, thanking the community for their support during this difficult time. He shared his heartfelt message, acknowledging the outpouring of love and prayers from everyone.
The family’s heartbreaking story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by natural elements, urging authorities to take prompt action to prevent further tragedies.
