A 43-year-old woman named Shauna Rae Dokken from Minnesota is facing charges of criminal vehicular homicide after a fatal crash that claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman, Barbara Lee Welberg. The incident occurred on May 29 when Dokken allegedly drove her Ford pick-up truck onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Kia Sorento.
Reports suggest that Dokken was under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the accident. The collision caused Welberg’s vehicle to overturn, resulting in her death at the scene. Dokken sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to court documents, Dokken has provided inconsistent and conflicting statements about the events leading up to the crash. In one account, she claimed that her dog distracted her while driving and even grabbed the steering wheel, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.
Witnesses reported Dokken driving erratically before the accident, with one individual stating that she veered into oncoming traffic. Another witness mentioned that Dokken seemed to be intentionally targeting his vehicle. Police noted that Dokken displayed slurred speech and admitted to consuming prescription drugs like Buspar, Lorazepam, and Adderall.
Dokken is currently in custody with a bail set at $200,000. A detention order was signed by Roseau County District Court Judge Tamara Yon, and Dokken is expected to appear in court on June 10 for a probation violation hearing. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
