A Michael Jordan road jersey worn during the 1998 NBA Finals has been sold in a private transaction for a record-breaking $14 million. The auction house, Hunt Auctions, revealed this news, highlighting it as the highest price ever paid for basketball memorabilia.
The buyer of the iconic red jersey, worn by Jordan in Game 2 of the 1998 finals where the Chicago Bulls faced the Utah Jazz, was disclosed as Ron Firman, a real estate investor from Miami. This particular game ultimately led to the Bulls’ victory, securing Jordan’s sixth and final NBA championship.
The significance of Michael Jordan in the sports memorabilia market has reached new heights, now being considered an elite asset class akin to renowned works of art. Hunt Auctions’ president, David Hunt, expressed satisfaction in facilitating this historic sale, marking a significant milestone in the industry.
Although the $14 million price tag ranks as the second-highest amount paid for a game-worn jersey, it falls behind the $24.12 million spent on Babe Ruth’s jersey from the 1932 World Series. Notably, this is the third instance where a Michael Jordan jersey from the 1998 finals has fetched over $10 million, indicating the enduring appeal of Jordan’s legacy.
Ron Firman, the proud new owner of the jersey, shared his excitement about the acquisition in a statement released by the auction house. Acquired from a private collector in 2003, the jersey has maintained a consistent chain of ownership, changing hands only once since its original purchase from the Bulls.
Interest in memorabilia from the 1998 NBA Finals and Jordan’s final season with the Bulls remains high among collectors. In a previous auction, a pair of Air Jordan sneakers worn by Jordan during Game 2 against the Jazz set a record by selling for $2.2 million, further solidifying the enduring popularity of Jordan-related items in the collector’s market.
