The Kremlin’s recent increase in ballistic missile strikes on Ukrainian cities is seen as a response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s perceived looming defeat. Putin’s diminishing influence over Kyiv is prompting Ukraine to retaliate fiercely against his aggressive actions.
Kyiv has been targeting Putin’s energy infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities, through strategic drone and missile attacks, even extending their operations into Russia by hitting the logistics hub of ‘Russian Amazon’ – Wildberries.
In a concerning development, the Kremlin’s air force launched a significant ballistic missile assault on Kyiv, marking the largest attack since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Ukrainian intelligence estimates indicate the use of 25 ballistic missiles and ten Zircon hypersonic missiles during the onslaught.
These ballistic missiles, known for their steep trajectory just outside the atmosphere, pose a challenge for interception due to their high speed and cost. President Zelensky is urgently seeking NATO’s support in providing Patriot missiles for defense against the escalating threat.
However, the limited production of Patriot missiles by the US, coupled with the rapid acceleration of Russian ballistic missile manufacturing capabilities, creates a concerning asymmetry in defense capabilities between the two sides.
The recent attack on Kyiv resulted in casualties and widespread damage, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced defense mechanisms against ballistic threats. As Russia continues to rely on such missiles to exploit Ukraine’s vulnerabilities, securing a stable supply of Patriot interceptors becomes crucial to deter future attacks and protect critical infrastructure.
