Police in Northern Ireland have apprehended a 27-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident where an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle. The event occurred in the Model Farm estate in Downpatrick around 4:45 am on Sunday. The injured officer, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial attempts to halt a vehicle in the Fountain Street area led officers to locate the vehicle in Ballymote Walk. Subsequently, a man was observed fleeing from the vehicle, prompting a pursuit towards Colmcille Road, as reported by Belfast Live.
According to the authorities, upon the officers’ return to their vehicle, an individual had entered the driver’s seat and drove recklessly, eventually targeting an officer directly. A shot was fired by the officer before being struck by the vehicle.
After abandoning the police vehicle, the suspect absconded from the scene. The 27-year-old suspect was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in police custody.
The injured officer received urgent medical attention at the scene from police colleagues, with additional support from the local community members. Subsequently, the officer was transported to the hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The police vehicle, the officer’s weapon, and ammunition were all recovered and taken for forensic analysis.
Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones stated, “As is protocol when a police firearm is drawn, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been notified, and their investigation is underway.”
Jones further added, “Officers risk their safety on the front line to protect the public – they should not be subject to assaults while carrying out their duties. Today’s incident is a stark reminder of the hazards they encounter.”
“Our thoughts are with the injured officer as he undergoes medical care in the hospital. We will continue to provide support to him and his family.”
Jones emphasized the potentially life-altering or fatal consequences of the morning’s events, highlighting the actions taken in defense of life to safeguard the officer and fellow law enforcement personnel.
The Serious Crime branch detectives have initiated an investigation into the attempted murder, with inquiries progressing swiftly.
Individuals possessing information or relevant footage of the incident are urged to contact the police on 101, quoting reference number 317 31/05/26. Alternatively, reports can be submitted online through the PSNI website or anonymously to Crimestoppers.
