Guests staying at a high-end hotel in the Dominican Republic faced a distressing situation as a fire broke out, resulting in the destruction of their passports and essential travel documents. After being evacuated from the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham last week due to the fire incident that claimed the life of one individual, nearly 1,700 guests are now dealing with the aftermath.
Efforts are underway by the hotel staff at the affected luxury resort to assist the stranded guests who lost their identification documents in the blaze. Amanda Santana, a hotel executive, mentioned that they are collaborating with embassies and governments to facilitate the reentry process for these guests who are now without passports.
Collaborating with local authorities, the hotel staff is actively engaged in helping the affected individuals obtain the necessary documents to return home safely. The exact number of guests among the evacuees who lost their travel documents or belongings during the fire remains unknown.
The fire incident at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel, which led to the tragic death of a holidaymaker and injuries to others, prompted emergency response teams to the scene. Following the unfortunate event, numerous guests and staff were relocated to nearby accommodations while the hotel remains closed until further notice.
The rapid spread of the fire was exacerbated by strong winds and the flammable palm roofing material used at parts of the resort, according to initial findings by the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Centre (COE). The country, known for being a top tourist destination in the Caribbean, attracts millions of visitors annually.
Situated in a once serene fishing village, the hotel now stands as a popular tourist hub in the Caribbean nation, having undergone significant renovations in recent years to enhance guest experiences. Despite the challenges faced during the fire suppression efforts, residents expressed concerns on social media regarding the scale of the inferno and the need for additional support to fully extinguish it.
The community mourns the loss of the guest and extends condolences to the family, awaiting further details from the autopsy. As investigations continue, the hotel remains closed, and guests are being accommodated in alternative lodgings as the impacted area is being assessed for future operations.
