In a surprising discovery at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, a large African spurred tortoise named Molly was found wandering slowly at the wetland’s edge. Staff, including nature interpreter Gillian Malchuk, were puzzled by Molly’s presence as her species typically originates from the Sahara desert, not the Canadian prairie.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, the staff embarked on a search and rescue mission for the 36-kilogram creature. Initially assuming it was a common snapping turtle, their perspective shifted when a sighting was documented on the iNaturalist app.
Upon locating Molly in the parking lot, staff members provided her with cucumbers and flower petals, caring for her until her owners were identified through a social media post. Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years, joyfully reunited with her on July 22.
It remains a mystery how Molly journeyed approximately 20 kilometers to the marsh, with speculations ranging from a misguided Samaritan relocating her to her own Houdini-like escape skills. Malchuk reflected on the unusual situation, emphasizing the uniqueness of Molly’s unexpected adventure.
