“Loblaw Reinstates Country-of-Origin Labels on Produce Amid Customer Backlash”

Loblaw has decided to reinstate country-of-origin labeling on produce signs after facing significant criticism from customers. The controversy arose when shoppers observed that the information indicating where the food was grown was missing from produce displays.

Karla Hennig, a dedicated “Buy Canadian” consumer from Penticton, B.C., expressed disappointment upon noticing the absence of origin details at her local Superstore. She emphasized the importance of transparency in knowing what one consumes, stating that the lack of labeling was disrespectful to her time and money.

While Loblaw initially removed country-of-origin information in most provinces, it continued to provide such details in Ontario and Quebec due to provincial regulations requiring labeling transparency. This change sparked backlash on social media platforms in other regions, with customers expressing discontent over the timing of the decision coinciding with trade uncertainties between Canada and the U.S.

Ellen Goddard, an agricultural economist at the University of Alberta, suggested that the heightened emotional response from customers could lead Loblaw to revert its policy. As anticipated, following public pressure and media inquiries, the grocer acknowledged the importance of supporting Canadian products amid trade uncertainties and announced the reintroduction of country-of-origin labeling on produce displays and the inclusion of a “T” symbol on shelf labels for U.S. tariff-affected American products.

The move by Loblaw aims to assist shoppers in identifying and choosing Canadian products during a period of trade instability with the United States.
