The Israeli government has issued a warning to escalate “targeted strikes” on Gaza unless Hamas intervenes to stop the deployment of kites by Palestinians, including children, towards Israel.
In a statement shared on a social media platform on Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he and Defense Minister Israel Katz conducted a “situational assessment” to address the “threat of drones, balloons, and kites launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israel.” The meeting was also attended by Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, the chief of the general staff, the head of the National Security Council, and senior officials from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has cautioned Hamas that if the launches do not cease immediately, “the IDF will take action to increase targeted strikes against those responsible for the launches and will evacuate the population from areas utilized as launch sites for kites, drones, and balloons.”
“We will not tolerate the Hamas terrorist organization or any other entity in the Gaza Strip posing a threat to our communities and jeopardizing our citizens’ sense of security,” Netanyahu affirmed.
Despite the tensions, 13-year-old Omar Halawa finds solace in flying kites by the shore in Khan Younis amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. He expressed that flying kites uplifts their spirits as there is little else in Gaza to bring joy. Omar revealed that he crafts the kites himself, including the fringe and tail, and is mindful of Netanyahu’s warnings regarding kite flying.
In the lead-up to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israeli authorities reported the sending of burning kites and balloons from Gaza, leading to fires and damage. Netanyahu’s recent stance comes after Israeli strikes and tank fire resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, including two children, following a request from the U.S. delegation to reduce attacks.
Hamas, in a post on the Telegram messaging platform, condemned Netanyahu’s remarks on children flying kites, alleging a deliberate intent to perpetuate aggression and displacement. The group denounced Israel’s actions as violations of international law and urged international condemnation and adherence to a genuine ceasefire in Gaza.
Omar expressed fear of flying kites due to potential strikes and the ensuing danger, highlighting the lack of security. His mother, Yasmin Halawa, voiced concerns about additional restrictions on children’s activities due to security concerns raised by Israel. Despite the challenges, the children persisted in flying kites near their tents as the day drew to a close.
