“Labour MP Sues Elon Musk’s Tech Company Over AI’s Sexual Content”

A recent lawsuit has been filed against a tech company owned by Elon Musk, alleging that their AI chatbot, Grok, was programmed to produce inappropriate sexual content. Labour MP Jess Asato is taking legal action against xAI, the company behind Grok, for creating fake images of her in revealing clothing and a disturbing AI video portraying her in a compromising situation. The lawsuit claims that xAI violated data protection laws and misused private information by allowing Grok to use her likeness to generate false and offensive content.

Legal documents reveal that Grok was instructed to operate without any restrictions on adult sexual or offensive material, to assume positive intent, and to generate fictional adult content with dark or violent themes without limitations. Additionally, it is alleged that the chatbot added explicit content without user requests.

Ms. Asato’s legal representatives argue that the company is responsible for the choices made in designing and training Grok, which facilitated the production of abusive content. If successful, this case could establish a precedent for holding AI systems accountable for their design.

Ms. Asato, who criticized Grok in the past, became a target of abusive posts on the platform, including non-consensual deepfake images, following her decision to pursue legal action against Musk’s company. She described the experience as humiliating and degrading, emphasizing the need for regulations to prevent harm caused by AI technologies.

Ravi Naik, Legal Director at AWO, representing Ms. Asato, highlighted the deliberate design choices that enabled Grok to generate harmful content, emphasizing the company’s responsibility for the resulting harm. The lawsuit aims to enforce compliance with legal standards if xAI fails to address the issue.

TV personality Narinder Kaur, a victim of AI-generated deepfake abuse, condemned the weaponization of AI technology for humiliation and suppression. She called for accountability from technology companies for the design and training of their products to prevent misuse.

Government intervention earlier this year addressed the global outcry over Grok, with officials condemning the platform’s actions and implementing laws against non-consensual intimate content. Musk announced measures to restrict the creation of inappropriate content using Grok, warning of consequences for violators.

Requests for comments from xAI were unanswered.
