“Kennedy Center Closure Amid Trump Naming Dispute”

Fencing was erected around the primary Kennedy Center structure on Wednesday following a decision by the board, which has ties to former President Trump, to shut down most of the performing arts venue for maintenance work. This move came after a judge prohibited the institution from reinstating Trump’s name on the building.

The closure was justified by the Republican president citing safety repairs, contingent upon the board’s approval to append his name to the edifice, for which Congress had allocated $257 million. Critics of the closure highlighted the lack of access for vehicles and pedestrians to the building, as confirmed by a security guard informing an Associated Press reporter of the closure.

Concerns have been raised by activists, such as Laura Bligh from Hands Off the Arts, about the possibility of the building being demolished before legal proceedings are finalized, fearing a scenario akin to the demolition of the East Wing by the Trump administration. Plans by Trump also include the replacement of the East Wing with a ballroom at the White House, as well as other construction projects.

Proposals by the Kennedy Center board to incorporate Trump’s name into the building were rejected by Judge Christopher Cooper, emphasizing the necessity of congressional approval for any changes. Rep. Joyce Beatty sought an emergency court hearing, labeling Trump’s closure of the center as unlawful, with ongoing tensions leading to a confrontation during a virtual board meeting.

Despite requests for comment, the Kennedy Center spokesperson, Roma Daravi, did not respond directly but emphasized the closure for safety reasons due to infrastructure issues. Maria Shriver, a relative of John F. Kennedy, expressed disappointment over the standoff regarding the building’s naming rights, criticizing the focus on personal branding amid other pressing national matters.
