Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has mentioned that the country is awaiting approval from the United States to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. This initiative, termed as “voluntary emigration,” is viewed by many as a contentious plan that could lead to forced displacement and has been criticized as ethnic cleansing. Despite Israel’s readiness to assist in the emigration process, Palestinians in Gaza have expressed apprehension, fearing potential forced expulsion.
Reports from Yedioth Ahronoth indicate that Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is set to unveil a plan called “Disengagement 710” that aims to gradually remove Palestinians over a seven-year period. This announcement is expected to coincide with Ben-Gvir’s campaign for the upcoming legislative elections in October.
Defense Minister Katz emphasized the necessity of this move, citing the importance of finding countries willing to receive the relocated Palestinians. He stated that the Israeli government is well-prepared and organized to facilitate the emigration process through various means, including sea and air transportation.
The backdrop for this plan includes the aftermath of the Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023, resulting in significant casualties and hostages. Subsequent Israeli military actions in Gaza have led to widespread destruction and claimed numerous lives, leaving the region in ruins.
While former U.S. President Donald Trump previously proposed taking over Gaza and displacing its residents for redevelopment purposes, these ideas were met with widespread criticism. Despite initial considerations, Trump later established a “Board of Peace” to address the conflict in Gaza but made little progress due to external pressures.
The United Nations has condemned any forced relocation of Palestinians, emphasizing the illegality of such actions under international law. Recent concerns have been raised regarding potential ethnic cleansing by Israeli authorities in Gaza and the West Bank, with reports suggesting a systematic effort to displace Palestinians from their homes.
Many Palestinians in Gaza, despite facing dire living conditions following prolonged conflicts, remain steadfast in their refusal to leave.
