Iran Issues Stern Warning to Oil Tankers in Hormuz Strait

Iran’s joint military command has issued a stern warning to oil tankers traversing the Strait of Hormuz, stating that they must adhere to the designated route or face a robust retaliatory action. This caution, given on July 2 amidst escalating tensions in the region, underscores the significance of the critical oil transport passage.

Negotiations surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have been a focal point in efforts to resolve the conflict between Iran and other nations, triggered by joint strikes on Iranian sites by the US and Israel. The Khatam al-Anbiya military command, as reported by Iranian state television, released this statement following diplomatic discussions in Qatar involving US and Iranian representatives.

While the exact reason behind Iran’s warning remains unclear, the US Central Command emphasized the importance of maintaining the free flow of commerce through the strait during a meeting with Middle Eastern officials in Bahrain. Iran’s statement highlighted the consequences of non-compliance with navigation protocols in the region, including immediate and forceful responses to violations.

Despite a temporary agreement allowing ships to pass through the strait without fees, Iran’s insistence on controlling vessel routes and imposing charges in the future has drawn opposition from the US and Gulf Arab states. Recent attempts to introduce alternative shipping routes near Oman prompted unrest in the region, leading to attacks. However, ship traffic in the strait has shown signs of recovery, with a notable increase in vessel transits compared to previous weeks.

Although ship traffic levels in the strait have yet to return to pre-conflict norms, the recent surge in vessels passing through indicates a gradual restoration of maritime activities in the region.
