Indigenous Actress Georgina Lightning Dies at 63

Indigenous actress and filmmaker Georgina Lightning passed away at 63 years old. The sad news was shared by her daughter, Crystle Lightning, on social media late Saturday. However, no details regarding the cause of her death were disclosed at that time.

Reports on social platforms have connected her passing to the Enoch Indian Relay World Championship held at the Enoch Park Race Track. Lightning had posted about this event on her Facebook page just a day before her demise was publicly announced.

The Enoch Cree Nation released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss of a community member following an incident during the Indian relay event on Saturday. Although the nation did not confirm the identity of the deceased individual.

According to the RCMP, officers responded to a call at the Enoch Park Race Track shortly after 6:30 p.m. where a woman had already passed away before their arrival. The police mentioned that the woman who lost her life was in the media area, but did not confirm her identity.

The RCMP stated that the Occupational Health and Safety authorities will handle the ensuing investigation. Born in Edmonton, Lightning was a member of the Samson Cree Nation situated approximately 100 kilometers south of the city.

Apart from her contributions to the film industry, she was recognized for her advocacy on behalf of First Nations causes.
