An Illinois woman, Corie Walsh, has been accused of murdering her two-year-old son, Barrett, at their suburban Chicago home. Prosecutors revealed that Walsh had been actively engaged in following the high-profile trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, and was discussing it with friends just hours before her son’s tragic death on September 1.
Walsh faces three charges of first-degree murder, with authorities stating that she believed her son was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” Found in the home with self-inflicted injuries, Walsh admitted to investigators that she killed her son. Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, described the incident as a result of a psychotic episode, calling it a family tragedy.
Barrett was discovered deceased in the basement by a neighbor, prompting a 911 call and attempts to resuscitate him before he was pronounced dead at a hospital. The autopsy revealed that his death was caused by asphyxia resulting from ligature compression of the neck.
Police found Walsh in a bathtub with cuts on her wrists and thighs. She was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. The revelation of Walsh’s connection to Clancy’s trial emerged after a mistrial was declared in that case, where Clancy, a former nurse, was charged with killing her three children.
While Walsh’s interest in Clancy’s trial was noted, authorities in Illinois have not linked it to the tragic death of Barrett. Frankfort police and Will County prosecutors have not commented on the case.
