ICE Shooting of Dominican Man Sparks Outrage in NYC

U.S. federal immigration officers injured a man from the Dominican Republic during his arrest in New York City on Thursday, as part of a “targeted enforcement operation,” according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Protesters highlighted this incident as a reflection of the risks associated with the immigration crackdown under the Trump administration.

The man, identified as a “criminal illegal alien” with a prior grand larceny conviction and a history of arrests, is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital after being shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. The exact circumstances leading to the shooting were not detailed by DHS, which stated that the officer discharged his weapon, causing the man’s injuries. The department criticized the release of the man in December 2023, attributing it to what they termed as “reckless” policies in cities led by Democrats like New York.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the ICE raids and called for their halt in the city through a social media statement, while demonstrators present at the scene demanded the removal of ICE from the streets.

The shooting occurred in the Marble Hill neighborhood, a small area in Manhattan connected to the Bronx. Witnesses, including Pedro Almaraz, an employee at a nearby restaurant, reported hearing several gunshots and observing the man on the ground surrounded by officers with DHS markings on their face masks and vests.

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York, a Democrat, expressed the need for federal authorities to provide a comprehensive explanation of the incident, emphasizing transparency and accountability to the public.

Videos and images shared on social media captured moments following the shooting, showing the injured man seated with his hands restrained and later being taken into a police vehicle by New York City officers. Additionally, footage displayed ICE agents at the scene, with one seen carrying a rifle.

Mamdani described the situation as “unconscionable and incredibly serious,” pledging to demand an end to ICE enforcement activities in the city during discussions with the President to prevent further community distress.
