A rapidly spreading wildfire in northwest Reno, Nevada, engulfed homes on Sunday, creating challenges for firefighters as shifting winds hindered their efforts to contain the blaze. The authorities issued evacuation orders for about 90,000 individuals due to the fire’s unpredictability.
The Hawk Fire, suspected to be “human-caused,” started on Saturday and rapidly expanded to over 60 square kilometers in the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest near the California state border. The fire prompted the evacuation of 42,000 residents, with an additional 45,000 people in the surrounding warning zone.
Residents were urged to leave immediately and be prepared for an extended evacuation period as the winds were expected to intensify, making the fire more erratic. One resident, Cari Kieffer, shared the devastation of losing her home and belongings as the fire advanced.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and deployed the Nevada National Guard to assist with firefighting efforts. Nearly 800 fire personnel were mobilized to combat the blaze. Power outages affected nearly 10,000 customers, and sections of a major highway were closed due to the fire.
Emergency shelters were set up for evacuees in Reno, with provisions for pets at separate locations. The fire, which escalated rapidly overnight, posed challenges for both residents and responders due to its speed and changing direction.
The incident highlights the heightened wildfire risk in the region, exacerbated by months of dry weather and unfavorable snowfall patterns in the American West. The University of Nevada and medical facilities took precautions, while authorities closely monitored the need for further evacuations.
