Three individuals have been apprehended after law enforcement labeled an appalling racially-motivated hate crime assault at a bustling North Down beach on Monday.
A police representative verified that a trio of men, all in their thirties, were attacked at Helen’s Bay beach around 9 pm. The incident occurred following a previous verbal dispute, resulting in the victims sustaining severe but not life-threatening injuries.
Shortly after, three men aged 28, 23, and 21 were intercepted in their vehicle and taken into custody on suspicion of causing bodily harm and carrying an offensive weapon. Subsequently, during a vehicle search, suspected class A and class B drugs were found, leading to the additional arrest of the 23-year-old for drug possession offenses.
The trio remains detained as the investigation progresses. Authorities confirmed that the case is being treated as a racially-motivated hate crime.
Acknowledging the shock experienced by beachgoers, the police spokesman reassured the community of the ongoing rapid investigation. An increased police presence ensured the safety of those at the beach, with prompt intervention commended by the public in preventing further escalation.
As inquiries advance, individuals who witnessed the assault or preceding events are urged to contact the police. Any footage of the incident is particularly sought after for investigation purposes.
