“Great White Shark Webster Spotted Near Newfoundland, Indicating Ocean Recovery”

A research organization studying sharks in the Atlantic Ocean has reported the presence of Webster, a great white shark, near Newfoundland and Labrador, indicating a recovering marine environment. Ocearch, a non-profit group aiding shark research, noted several great white shark sightings in the region in recent times.

Webster, a massive 12-foot, 1,000-pound shark, has been regularly spotted around the northern peninsula of Newfoundland this summer, particularly near beaches in the Cow Head area. Ocearch founder Chris Fischer mentioned that these white sharks return to specific locations and seal colonies each year for feeding, with some venturing as far north as Newfoundland.

Other great white sharks, including Dold and Monomoy, have also been photographed and tracked in the Newfoundland waters over the years. Fischer emphasized the positive aspect of the sharks’ presence, attributing it to the recovery of the great white shark population. He explained that the global population of these sharks was almost wiped out in the past but has shown signs of improvement with conservation efforts.

Despite potential fears surrounding great white sharks, Fischer highlighted the benefits of their presence in the ecosystem. He pointed out that sharks, by preying on seals, help maintain ecological balance by preserving fish stocks. Marine biologist Caroline Miri from Fisheries and Oceans Canada echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the crucial role sharks play in marine ecosystems.

Fischer revealed that Ocearch has tagged approximately 115 sharks across the Atlantic, from Florida to Newfoundland and Labrador. Webster, first tagged in September 2025 in Nova Scotia, was recently tracked near Cow Head in August 2026. Fischer reassured the public that as long as safety precautions are taken, there is no need to fear encounters with sharks like Webster.

The resurgence of great white sharks in Newfoundland waters signifies a positive shift in ocean health, marking a significant milestone for the region’s marine ecosystem.
