“Grandfather Upset Over Asda Store Mobility Scooter Dispute”

A 73-year-old grandfather, Tony Daniels, expressed disbelief after being escorted out of an Asda store in Widnes following a dispute over using a mobility scooter. According to Daniels, he was approached by security guards and instructed to leave the supermarket on June 18 when he declined to provide personal information to access the scooter, a practice he claims is not enforced at his local Asda branch on Smithdown Road.

Allegedly, Tony, a retired builder who relies on two walking sticks for mobility, requested to use a mobility scooter trolley at the Widnes store but was required by a security guard to disclose his name and address. Refusing to comply, he requested to speak with a manager. Subsequently, he found himself surrounded by multiple security guards after the manager accused him of having a negative attitude and demanded his immediate departure.

Tony, who cited his disabilities and health issues, including cancer, felt mistreated during the incident. He highlighted the stark difference in treatment between the Widnes store and his regular experience at the Asda on Smithdown Road, where he is accommodated without any issues.

In response, Asda clarified that it is standard procedure to request details from individuals using mobility scooters in-store for safety reasons. The company emphasized that this policy is implemented across all their stores with the intent of ensuring the well-being of both customers and staff. Asda confirmed that they have reached out to Tony to explain their protocol and are open to addressing any further inquiries directly with him.
