Jeffrey Donaldson, a former Member of Parliament and ex-leader of the DUP, is currently facing trial at Newry Crown Court on charges of rape, gross indecency, and indecent assault dating back to between 1985 and 2008, involving two alleged victims. His wife, Lady Donaldson, is also facing charges of aiding and abetting in a trial of the facts due to mental health reasons.
During the court proceedings, a woman referred to as complainant A testified that she was sexually abused by Donaldson when she was a child. She defended the credibility of her claims when questioned by Donaldson’s lawyer, Kieran Vaughan KC.
The woman highlighted a letter written by Donaldson expressing regret for causing pain and distress, which the prosecution argued was related to the alleged abuse. The defense challenged the timing of her disclosure to the police regarding the letter.
The woman maintained the letter’s relevance and detailed instances of inappropriate touching by Donaldson, including over-the-clothes and skin-to-skin contact. She stood firm on her account despite cross-examination discrepancies highlighted by the defense.
Following a break in proceedings, the woman explained her delay in formally reporting the abuse, citing apprehension about the public scrutiny and media coverage. She expressed anxiety and nearly reconsidered her decision to come forward.
The trial is set to continue next week, with the woman expected to face questioning from Eleanor Donaldson’s legal representative. Donaldson, who resigned as DUP leader in light of the allegations, was arrested and charged in March 2024. The trial is projected to last three to four weeks.
