A fishing enthusiast narrowly escaped a serious injury when he had a close encounter with a shark while diving at a popular tourist destination for the first time.
Henry Gibbs, a social media influencer hailing from New Zealand, expressed his gratitude for retaining his leg and foot functionality following a shark bite incident while spearfishing in Fiji on July 24.
After undergoing four surgeries and a skin graft, Gibbs shared on Instagram that he is on track for a full recovery, acknowledging his fortune in the process.
Reflecting on the episode, Gibbs noted, “I was in its territory, hunting its prey.”
He revealed that he was filming during the incident, having entered the water for spearfishing and encountering grey reef sharks in the vicinity, unsure of the provocation for the shark’s aggression.
Gibbs speculated, “Factors like the boat’s disturbance, noise from the spearguns, and general water activity might have piqued the shark’s curiosity or excitement.”
In hindsight, Gibbs admitted, “The signs were there to abort the dive. Underestimating the threat posed by a shark of that size was an oversight.”
Sharing insights from the incident, Gibbs advised opting for plain black wetsuits in tropical waters to avoid shark encounters.
He emphasized the importance of recognizing signs of shark agitation, erratic behavior, or escalating aggression, cautioning against assessing risk solely based on the shark’s size.
