A tragic incident in Glacier National Park, Montana, resulted in the death of a Florida man who fell 100 feet while being attacked by a surprised grizzly bear. This marks the first fatal bear mauling in the park since 1998. Authorities have confirmed that the bear responsible for the attack will not be euthanized or hunted as it was not actively hunting the man.
The victim, 33-year-old Anthony Pollio from Fort Lauderdale, was hiking alone on the Mount Brown Lookout trail when the attack occurred. The trail conditions, with many downed trees obstructing visibility, likely contributed to the surprise encounter between Pollio and the bear late at night. Despite Pollio’s attempt to use bear spray, he fell down a hillside while the bear continued its aggressive behavior.
After falling nearly 100 feet, Pollio managed to climb partway back up before the bear fatally attacked him. The bear, believed to be at least 15 years old and a resident of Glacier Park, left the area after the gruesome incident. Investigators determined that the attack was defensive in nature, with the bear being startled by Pollio’s presence.
Officials emphasized that bear attacks in the park are rare, with only a few incidents recorded over several decades. To prevent similar incidents, hikers are advised to remain vigilant in bear country, make noise while hiking, carry bear spray, and avoid hiking alone or at night. These precautions can help prevent unexpected encounters with bears in the wilderness.
