A federal judge has issued a ruling preventing the Kennedy Center from reinstating President Donald Trump’s name to the arts venue. The judge stated that this action would defy a prior decision that deemed the addition of Trump’s name to the building as unlawful when an inscription acknowledging his role in the venue’s renovation and restoration was approved.
Judge Christopher Cooper emphasized that any memorials for President Trump or others could not be installed at the Kennedy Center without approval from Congress. The board associated with Trump at the Kennedy Center had previously voted to include the president’s name on the venue’s facade, intending it to read as “The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts restored and renovated by President Donald J. Trump.” Additionally, if the Trump Kennedy Center Fund reached a $100 million threshold, another inscription planned was “Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.”
The board had also proposed renaming the plaza in front of the Kennedy Center in Trump’s honor. However, Cooper’s ruling stated that only Congress has the authority to sanction changes to the venue’s name.
The ongoing dispute, which has spanned several months, saw the board facing opposition after initially placing Trump’s name above Kennedy’s on the building. Following legal challenges, a covering was later erected to obscure Trump’s name and most of Kennedy’s.
In a recent development, the board outlined various options to acknowledge Trump’s involvement, including inscriptions like “Renovation and endowment overseen by President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.” Another proposed option was “With gratitude for support from President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.”
Judge Cooper urged both sides in a hearing to seek a mediated solution to resolve the situation surrounding the performing arts center. The Kennedy Center board has highlighted the urgent need for renovations and financial support to prevent insolvency. Cooper emphasized the importance of finding a resolution in the public interest during the hearing.
