The family of Pablo Osorio Sánchez is urging Mexican federal authorities to connect the murder of the 26-year-old engineer with the investigation regarding the January abduction of 10 Canadian mining company employees. Osorio Sánchez was taken in the same town and timeframe as the Vizsla Silver Corp. workers. His body was found in the same hidden graves where nine of the abducted workers were discovered.
The family believes that insights into the Vizsla Silver kidnappings could shed light on Osorio Sánchez’s fate. Jaime López, Osorio Sánchez’s uncle, expressed the family’s need for answers regarding the circumstances of his kidnapping and the identities of the perpetrators.
Osorio Sánchez was taken on the same day armed individuals, allegedly associated with a Sinaloa cartel faction, raided the Vizsla Silver compound in Concordia, Sinaloa. His body was unearthed about two weeks later in a clandestine grave in El Verde, wrapped in a blue sheet marked as “Indicio C.”
Forensic examinations revealed that Osorio Sánchez succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head and endured severe blunt-force injuries before his demise. His family, devastated by the loss, described him as the eldest of three siblings.
The El Verde burial sites also held the remains of nine of the Vizsla Silver workers abducted alongside Osorio Sánchez. The fate of the tenth worker, Francisco Antonio Esparza Yáñez, responsible for community relations, remains unknown.
Legal representatives handling Osorio Sánchez’s case and the Vizsla Silver investigation highlighted the separation of the inquiries by different branches within the federal Attorney General’s Office. The lack of clarity surrounding the discovery of the graves in El Verde and those interred alongside Osorio Sánchez raises concerns among the legal team.
The kidnapping and killings of Osorio Sánchez and the Vizsla Silver employees occurred amid a prolonged internal conflict within the Sinaloa cartel. Federal authorities attributed the crimes to a cell affiliated with the La Chapiza faction. Recent arrests of individuals linked to the case, including members of the La Chapiza commando unit, signify progress in the investigations.
The civil unrest in Sinaloa, detailed in a report by the International Crisis Group, prompted numerous families to flee the region. Vizsla Silver’s operations in the conflict-ridden area have faced challenges, with control over services by rival factions impacting the local populace.
