A fatality resulted from a collision between two freight trains on a railway bridge in Germany overnight, according to officials.
The incident unfolded in the northern district of Milbertshofen in Munich, causing two train carriages to fall off the bridge onto the street below. Emergency services were notified at 1:40 am CEST (12:40 am BST), prompting approximately 60 first responders to rush to the scene, as confirmed by a fire department spokesperson.
The victim’s identity in the crash was not disclosed by the German news agency dpa. The reason behind the collision remained unknown at the immediate time of reporting.
The carriages plummeted approximately 16 feet from the bridge, as per dpa’s information. Munich police confirmed the closure of the street beneath the bridge and advised motorists to steer clear of the area during the ongoing recovery and clearance operations.
The derailed carriages were not transporting any goods, and there were no public safety concerns, according to dpa. No additional injuries were reported from the incident.
Schleissheimer Strasse was shut down in both directions post the event, as detailed by German newspaper Bild. A police spokesperson mentioned, “The recovery efforts will likely extend into Saturday, possibly even Sunday.”
The mishap did not impact train passengers as the affected track is exclusively utilized by freight trains, as stated by a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson.
