In a bold move, Nigel Farage is set to enter a by-election framed as a battle between “the people” and the establishment, facing numerous fringe party contenders, including a candidate known as Count Binface sporting a bin on his head.
The leader of Reform UK stepped down amidst financial scrutiny, emphasizing that the constituents in Clacton should judge his actions. Notably, major parties like Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and the Green Party have opted out of the August 13 contest, leaving Count Binface as Farage’s primary opponent.
With a whopping 33 rival candidates, this by-election reportedly sets a new record for parliamentary contests, surpassing the previous high of 26 candidates set in 2008 at the Haltemprice and Howden by-election. Tendring District Council confirmed the extensive list of candidates vying against Farage in Clacton.
Count Binface, also known as Jonathan David Harvey, a renowned British comedian and producer associated with popular shows like The Thick of It and Have I Got News For You, presents himself as an “intergalactic space warrior” hailing from the planet Sigma IX. With a satirical approach, he has challenged prominent figures like Rishi Sunak, Andy Burnham, and Boris Johnson in past elections.
Meanwhile, Laurence Fox, former actor and leader of the Reclaim Party, has announced his candidacy for the by-election, criticizing the current state of politics and aiming to represent the voters of Clacton while advocating for “the Fight on the Right.”
Other notable candidates in the race include Howling Laud Hope from the Monster Raving Loony Party, known for their eccentric policies such as deploying air bags in the Stock Exchange and painting half of grey squirrels red. Additionally, former Conservative MEP John Stevens is running for the Rejoin EU Party, emphasizing Brexit as a central issue for voters to consider.
The competition intensifies with diverse candidates like former Dating Naked contestant Luke Worley, who vows to enhance Clacton’s infrastructure and support local businesses, challenging Farage and other prominent contenders. As the campaign unfolds, Clacton awaits the outcome of this unique and bustling electoral race.
