A significant explosion has shaken Monaco, leaving a Ukrainian billionaire oligarch and his wife in critical condition. Vadim Ermolaev, aged 58, a prominent real estate tycoon and the 23rd wealthiest individual in Ukraine as per Forbes, is the victim of the blast. He reportedly fled Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
Authorities are in pursuit of a suspect who was captured on CCTV discarding a backpack on Rue du Révérend Père Louis Frolla. Monaco’s Minister of State, Christophe Mirmand, labeled the incident as a “deliberate explosion.” The explosive device, believed to be a “parcel bomb,” contained bolts and shot, causing serious injuries to Ermolaev and his wife. A 13-year-old boy also sustained injuries but of a lesser degree.
After the explosion, a manhunt ensued as the suspect fled towards Beausoleil, a town bordering France. Emergency response teams, including 50 firefighters and 84 police officers, swiftly arrived at the scene. Monaco’s leader, Prince Albert II, condemned the attack as an “odious act,” and collaborative efforts with French authorities are underway.
Forensic investigators and law enforcement officials worked diligently to gather evidence at the scene. A press conference was held with key officials providing updates on the investigation progress. The suspect, identified through video surveillance, reportedly crossed into France, prompting intensified search efforts.
The Monaco Government has released updates on the investigation, with the Public Prosecutor expected to announce initial findings soon. Meanwhile, the community remains on high alert, with a strong police presence and ongoing efforts to locate the suspect. French authorities have extended support, reinforcing the search operation.
Reports indicate that Vadim Ermolaev’s partner was among those affected by the explosion. Ermolaev, a prominent businessman associated with the Alef Group, has faced sanctions in Ukraine due to his business activities in Crimea. The incident marks a rare occurrence in Monaco’s history, prompting heightened security measures and a thorough investigation into the attack.
