A tragic incident unfolded when a hiker fell to his death from a cliff after posing for a photo at the summit. The event took place at Pedra do Macaco trail in Marica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The hiker, identified as Caio Arrabal, aged 44, lost his footing while descending from a rock formation where he had positioned himself for a picture. The fall, estimated to be about 492 feet, occurred as he attempted to maneuver down the cliff edge.
Emergency services were alerted around 11:40 am, prompting a search operation that lasted for approximately four hours. The challenging terrain and limited access to the area where the hiker fell necessitated the use of ropes and air support by the rescue teams. Arrabal, who was guiding visitors along the trail for the first time, was reported to have lacked proper warning signs along the path.
Matheus Moura, a rescue instructor involved in the recovery effort, described the operation as complex due to the steep and densely forested location of the incident. He highlighted the arduous journey through the wooded area, involving rope climbing and multiple procedures to reach the site. This unfortunate event marks the second tragedy in the Marica region within a fortnight.
In a separate incident on June 14, Rosemary Garcia, aged 59, fell from a cliff at a zip-line park known as Gruta do Spar. Garcia, part of a group engaged in rappelling inside the cave, reportedly tumbled while applying insect repellent. Witnesses mentioned her safety gear, including a helmet and gloves, but despite attempts by a guide to prevent the fall, she plummeted around 98 feet.
These incidents serve as somber reminders of the risks associated with outdoor activities and the importance of safety precautions in such environments.
