Zuber warned that wildfires could soon engulf all of Europe, with current fires wreaking havoc in France, Spain, Greece, and Portugal.
“The next risk is already moving towards Greece and Central Europe,” Zuber informed reporters, highlighting the imminent threat to these regions. She further emphasized the escalating danger, stating that Italy could face heightened risk at the beginning of August, potentially leading to widespread wildfires across the Iberian Peninsula and beyond.
Tragically, three firefighters lost their lives battling wildfires in Greece as the blazes spread rapidly across various regions, including Crete, Paros, and Lesvos. However, some relief is in sight as the massive fire in Gironde, which ravaged 42,000 hectares, is currently stable following a relatively calm night, with more favorable weather conditions expected.
Moreover, the situation remains critical in other parts of Europe, with wildfires impacting communities and forcing evacuations. In France, the extreme heatwave has prompted concerns about a nuclear power plant shutdown due to rising temperatures, adding to the environmental challenges faced by the continent.
