“Education Secretary Urges Parents to Send Kids to School Amid Heatwave”

Parents are advised by Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to send their children to school if it remains open during the ongoing heatwave, despite over 1,000 schools being closed or partially shut due to the extreme heat on Wednesday. Record-breaking temperatures of 36C were reported in Wisley, Surrey, and Gosport, Hampshire. Schools that are operational are implementing special measures to help students and staff cope with the conditions, including relaxing uniform rules. Ms. Phillipson emphasized the importance of sending children to school, highlighting the efforts being made to ensure their well-being, such as keeping classrooms cool, promoting hydration, and teaching water safety skills. She urged parents to communicate with schools regarding any medical concerns related to the heat. Additionally, she supported the “Save Lives for Sam” campaign, calling for increased awareness of water safety in schools.

As the heatwave persists, temperatures are expected to approach 40C, prompting health warnings and travel disruptions. The Met Office issued a red weather warning and a heat health alert for England, indicating potential risks to life. Despite the challenges posed by the extreme heat, emergency services have been active, including ongoing searches for individuals in open water.

Following the school closures, the National Education Union called for greater investment in school infrastructure to address the heat-related challenges faced by older buildings. Rail services across Britain experienced disruptions, with operators advising passengers to travel only when necessary and reducing train speeds to prevent track damage. Water companies have implemented measures to manage increased demand during the heatwave, including hosepipe bans and encouraging water conservation.

Pet owners were advised by the RSPCA not to walk their dogs during the hottest times of the day to prevent heat-related issues. The National Energy System Operator issued an electricity supply warning due to the strain on the power network caused by the extreme heat. Wimbledon qualifying matches were suspended due to technical issues related to the heat, highlighting the impact on various sectors.

As the heatwave continues, the Met Office issued warnings for further high temperatures and thunderstorms across parts of England. The public is urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.
