The Edmonton Oilers’ choice to ink a hockey player who was cleared of sexual assault allegations last year has stirred disappointment and demands for better actions from the team. The backlash began on Wednesday when the team revealed the signing of Alex Formenton to a one-year contract valued at $850,000 US. Formenton was among five players from Canada’s 2018 world junior team who faced accusations of sexual assault following an incident with a woman after a Hockey Canada event in London, Ont.
Criticism swiftly mounted, with fans expressing strong disapproval on social media platforms. Many commenters on an Oilers Instagram post about the signing expressed feelings of embarrassment, disgust, and disappointment. While some defended the decision, numerous fans stated they would not back the team as long as Formenton remained part of it.
One fan’s comment on social media garnered significant attention, emphasizing the need for the Oilers to prioritize their female supporters. The sentiment was echoed by a prominent fan known for dressing as a sequined Stanley Cup during NHL playoffs. She highlighted her personal experience as a sexual assault survivor and declared she could not support the team with Formenton on board.
In response, the fan initiated an online petition urging the Oilers to sever ties with Formenton. The five accused players, including Formenton, were acquitted in July 2025, leading to their reinstatement by the NHL. A subsequent ruling found them in breach of the Hockey Canada code of conduct, with four players facing extended suspensions from the program.
Formenton, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to join the Oilers, acknowledged the challenges he faced. The 26-year-old, hailing from Barrie, Ont., spent time playing in Switzerland before rejoining the NHL. Despite the public outcry, some have advocated for giving Formenton a chance post-acquittal, while others, including sexual assault survivors, have criticized the decision.
