“Domestic Violence Tragedy Unfolds in Saskatoon Court”

A caution is issued due to the sensitive nature of this story involving domestic violence and a gruesome murder. Chantal Lee McLaren complied with her abusive partner’s orders to clean up a brutal murder scene out of fear for her safety. Testifying in a Saskatoon court, she revealed her distress and reluctance. The case details were initially under a publication ban to ensure a fair trial for McLaren, who faced drug trafficking charges related to drugs found in the same residence as the murder.

McLaren denied the drug charge and her trial began on October 5. Following the jury’s sequestration for deliberation, information about the murder case became public. The incident, which occurred on February 3, 2024, involved the murder of Lee Perkins in a Saskatoon home, with his dismembered body concealed in a plastic container. McLaren, admitting to being an accessory after the murder, confessed to purchasing items used in the cleanup, not being present during the murder.

Her then-boyfriend, Edin Vrazalica, faces a first-degree murder charge, while another individual, Dillon Singler, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The victim’s family expressed their sorrow and anger during McLaren’s sentencing, sharing emotional stories about the impact of the tragic event on their lives.

Regarding McLaren’s sentencing, her lawyer emphasized the pattern of escalating intimate partner violence she endured, which influenced her actions. The Crown acknowledged the seriousness of the abuse but argued for McLaren’s incarceration due to her role in purchasing cleaning supplies. The defense advocated for a community-based sentence considering McLaren’s compliance with bail conditions and her responsibilities as a single mother. Justice Daryl Labach is to announce McLaren’s sentence on December 9.

In a court statement, McLaren expressed remorse for the tragic outcome and extended sympathy to Lee’s family, acknowledging the profound loss they experienced. She reflected on the privilege of caring for her daughter, contrasting it with the pain of Lee’s mother’s irreplaceable loss.
