Allen Siyou Wu expressed surprise at the repeated incidents of vandalism and copper wire theft at his student housing construction site in Windsor. The ongoing crimes have left him questioning the lack of support from the government despite the housing shortage in Canada. Wu emphasized the need for increased nighttime patrols to prevent such incidents and protect construction sites.
Wu and his business partners are developing new student residences near the University of Windsor campus, investing approximately $1.6 million in the project. The thefts, which have resulted in significant financial losses, typically occur overnight, with thieves cutting and stealing electrical cables. Despite reporting the thefts to the police, no response was received from the Windsor police department.
In response to the incidents, Wu reached out to the mayor’s office for guidance but was advised to consider hiring private security services. Frustrated by the challenges they have faced, including high building fees and lack of assistance, Wu and his partners are determined to address the security issues plaguing their construction site.
Norbert Bolger, chair of the Windsor-Essex Home Builders’ Association, acknowledged the prevalence of such crimes and recommended security measures like surveillance cameras and guard patrols. He empathized with Wu’s situation and advised him to expedite the project completion, underscoring the learning curve in the construction business.
Copper wire theft is a growing concern at both local and federal levels, with utility companies highlighting the risks to critical infrastructure. Windsor has been particularly affected by copper theft, prompting discussions on enhancing regulations and cracking down on such crimes. Windsor city council is exploring measures such as banning cash transactions for scrap copper to deter theft activities.
