Charleroi Airport, the second largest airport in Belgium located in Brussels, is scheduled to undergo an extensive renovation and revamp in 2028. The airport will be closed for an 11-week period from August 15 to October 31, affecting all flights during this time. Approximately two million passengers are expected to be impacted, including those traveling during the school summer holidays and October half-term break.
The renovation project, estimated to cost around €50 million (£42.8 million), will involve major changes, including the complete resurfacing of the airport’s 3,200-meter runway. Various airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, currently operate flights to and from Charleroi Airport. During the closure, airlines will need to reroute their flights to alternative airports, although specific details on these changes are yet to be disclosed. It is anticipated that flights may either be canceled or diverted during this period.
According to reports, the closure and renovation plan for Charleroi Airport’s runway have been organized by SOWAER, the company overseeing the works, for the second half of 2028.
