On August 6, officials revealed that the fire likely originated from a chainsaw, resulting in one individual being apprehended in connection to the incident. Herbert Wayne Smith, aged 65, was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in causing the fire, which occurred on Monday.
In an interview with KCRA-TV, Mr. Smith admitted to using a chainsaw to cut scrap wood, inadvertently triggering the blaze. Expressing remorse, he acknowledged the devastating consequences of the fire, stating that it would greatly impact his life.
The wildfire ravaged seven structures and consumed over 15 square miles of forest in Calaveras County’s Sierra Nevada foothills. Reports suggest that the fire was ignited due to improper use of equipment that produced sparks without adequate clearance of flammable vegetation, as mandated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
