Wayne Cormier, a 63-year-old powerlifter from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, is determined to pursue a world championship gold medal in powerlifting, a goal that has eluded him throughout his 51-year career, despite achieving numerous national and provincial titles and record-setting lifts. Cormier, who recently recovered from his second heart attack, is preparing to compete in the upcoming world championship event in Poland, emphasizing that fulfilling this ambition is essential for his powerlifting journey’s completeness.
Having participated in four previous world championships with a best finish of a bronze medal, Cormier’s relentless pursuit of international success brought him out of a nine-year retirement in 2012. He secured his qualification for the 2026 world championships by claiming multiple gold medals and setting six Canadian records at the Global Powerlifting Committee Canadian Championships in Edmonton earlier this year.
Despite facing health challenges, including a heart attack following his record-setting performance in Edmonton, Cormier remained resolute in his pursuit, with doctors clearing him to resume training after confirming no lasting damage to his heart. With a strong support system and a steadfast commitment to his goal, Cormier is focused on achieving success at the upcoming championship in Poland.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings in Lennoxville, Quebec, where his mother’s unwavering support propelled him into the world of powerlifting, Cormier’s journey has been marked by perseverance and dedication. As he gears up for the upcoming competition, Cormier’s motivation stems from a personal desire to achieve his long-standing dream and make his mark on the international stage.
Cormier’s departure for Poland is scheduled for Friday, with the competition set to commence on October 22. His unwavering determination and resilience serve as a testament to his commitment to chasing his white whale and achieving his ultimate goal in powerlifting.
